SEO result metrics and setting benchmarks that make sense (SEO content, newbie)
Hi SEO profs!
I'm an in-house SEO content creator. When hired, I was under the impression I'd be optimizing pages according to the strategy they had, but turned out I have to strategize, choose keywords and create quality content as well.
My problem is with their expectations, and I'm not sure if I am correct.
The website is in cooking/recipe/grocery shopping segment, with thousands of pages already (recipes, articles, etc.)
I am trying to create topic clusters around existing content and build long-form quality content around it as well. I am the only one creating content and have uploaded over 30 new pieces over the last two months that are slowly generating traffic and increasing the on-page time.
Now, they want me to track each URL separately, including organic traffic data from Ahrefs, GSC, and GA. Tracking these multiple metrics seems very unreasonable to me as 1) it hasn't even been 2-3 weeks since they went live and knowing how those numbers barely reflect the reality.
I have suggested tracking impressions and clicks that lead to conversion (as in user acquisition, "shopped" recipes, etc), and give it at least 2 months before making a decision about tactics that work. But they need me to set "benchmarks" for every keyword specifically, which I find impossible to do given the segment we are in. It's incredibly competitive and they want to rank for words like "breakfast casserole" for instance. I can set those 'benchmarks' but I'd be literally pulling the numbers out of my ass based on guessing.
Could you PLEASE give me some opinions on my view of this situation? And any advice and suggestion will be highly appreciated! Thank you!
