Opinions on Long format multi topic articles vs. Short single topic ones

Hey all, long time lurker here... I keep stumbling upon this question that I haven't been able to find an answer to. I am a relatively new site owner (3 months) and I am in the process of creating regular article content with educational/informational topics (25 articles so far).

My question is, what is the better kind of article to write in my situation or all together. An article that has a main topic with multiple subtopics (word count 2000-4000+) OR multiple individual articles with one specific topic (word count 400-1500)

The reason I ask this question is because at times I feel like I am spinning my wheels writing very large articles whilst getting non existent search traffic. I greatly appreciate any input or opinions on this matter of what I should be spending most of my writing time doing! 🙂
