Keywords // Search Numbers // Competition

So I've been learning about SEO for a little while (like 3 months) and I've gathered that the learning curve is steep.

One thing I've been trying to wrap my head around is... how do I find keywords that have low competition but also have searches? If a keyword always has medium to high searches will it always have high competition?
