Does a Website Databasing One Type of Items Stand a Chance?

Hi. I wonder if it is possible to rank a website which lists all items out there that belong to the same category. We all know these vehicle websites where you can pick a model, year and then browse through various stats.

I have an idea to create this type of website, obviously, not for vehicles, but you get the point. Most of the content would be whatever other websites have, with slight modifications/rewording. There's not much room to play around with concrete stats lol

The competition is fairly low, only about 4-6 established websites, with almost identical content. There is one that went parabolic in traffic in a year, but these guys took it to the next level with comparison options, graphics, etc. I guess Google loves some additional value. Their backlink profile is the weakest in the crowd.

My plan is to launch a basic "whatever others are doing" website and then work on improvements and additional upgrades if I see some traffic pick up.

Thoughts? Personal experiences? Appreciate it!
