Breadcrumb SCHEMA - Does it need actual breadcrumbs on the page?

Can you add breadcrumb schema for additional search engine benefits, but not have them actually designed into your website pages? In other words, would adding a JSON for breadcrumb schema have a positive effect for SEO without having a visual representation of breadrumbs on the site?
