What CMS should I use for content based on images?

I'm thinking about creating a website for my auntie. She creates beautiful artwork of cards for birthdays, new year's and etc.

Most of the content will consist of images, maybe a blog for news and announcements, etc. She will need to update content through the CMS and upload a lot of images. At this point, I'm thinking about WordPress because it's the most familiar to me. But - what theme would be most suitable?

Is WP a good choice or are there some better ones out there?

I have read about building a static site, but I have never done that before, so it kinda sounds scary.
