Do I really need a related degree for SEO jobs?

I'm currently planning on studying a non-marketing/communications degree in college, but I've been interested in SEO for a while, though not enough to swap my career path just yet. Is a lack of degree going to hurt me? I've seen some jobs list it as a requirement while others don't. I currently plan on minoring in communications, would that help at all?
