Help with Blog Comments for Wordpress Sites

I am currently in a SEO role for a marketing start up. We work with a lot of wordpress sites. I noticed some of the blog posts have comments with backlinks that someone added. There is no user comment function so I am unsure of how they did it. They are pending comments and haven't been approved. I am curious if this will negatively affect SEO if left alone? or should I get rid of them?
