Practical examples of migrating domains and best practices

Does anyone here have the following to share:

-Practical examples of having moved a domain to a new domain address and retained search rankings. If so, what did you learn through mount the process that’s inform a future domain transition? -Related, what best practices would you include as part of the shift in general?

I’m reviewing opportunities in the market, including acquiring a sub folder of content on a major site and moving just that portion to a new domain.

I’ve seen first hand this transition work and retain (even grow) rankings, but wanted to get more opinions here.
