How important is blog content to rank pages?

I work at a fairly new agency that sells SEO as an upsell from ads. Currently our SEO work consists of keyword research, on-page optimisations, linkbuilding, local and a little bit of technical.

Is it important to have blog writing added in that mix in order to rank a website? I'm curious as to what everyone has experienced here.
