Small business website has tons of backlinks leading to low-quality pages that seem to come and go. Is it link-buying or something else?
I'm looking at a website for a local business with nearly 800,000 backlinks. I only have access to 30,000 of those, and most seem to be coming from pretty low-quality sites. Here's what I'm seeing:
- More than 99% were created less than two months ago
- They point to loads of destination pages that seem to have been added and quickly removed
- Google's short descriptions for those pages contain utter garbage - either stuff that's totally irrelevant or nonsensical
What's going on here? Is this likely an example of backlink buying? The only other explanation I can think of is that their marketing team is testing something -- maybe the equivalent of an automatic spam filter (put out bad pages, see who links back to them, and disavow).
