Sitewide SEO Approach

I am doing well with On-Page SEO but I have a question about sitewide SEO. It’s a travel and lifestyle blog.

San Diego Example If I write a longer post (3,000+ words) on San Diego and follow it up with smaller 1,000 to 1,500 word posts about specific areas or activities, is this a sound, long term approach???

I am planning the balance of posts and hoping this will work well. TIA
