Difference between google updates and google algorithms (core update)

I think there is a difference between google updates and google algorithm. MUM, BERT, Panda and penguins are google algorithms or we can say core updates. These are the new ways of crawling, indexing and ranking the content which was not used earlier.

While google updates are just for making the existing algorithms better.

That's why there are hundreds of google updates in a year but one or two google algorithms (core update) in a year.
