Question About the Importance of Regular Content

I understand that releasing content regularly is important, and many sites advise releasing on a fixed schedule, eg. every week. There are clear benefits to doing so, as it staggers your content and gives you a chance to see how old content performs while making new content. That makes total sense to me.

But what I'm unclear on is ... does Google actually care if you release once every (say) 7 days, exactly, or if you release some content after 6 days, then 8, then 7, then 9, etc. ? In other words, is there some inherent ranking benefit to fixed times between releases, or does Google not actually care about the exact day you release ... it just wants to see lots of new content over time?
