Best practice for taxonomy structure?
Apologies in advance if this sub doesn't allow Wordpress / WooCommerce specific questions, but I'm really struggling to make an educated decision with my scenario. I am looking for some advice on best practice site structure from an SEO and usability perspective.
The website site is a book directory, its currently on woocommerce - affiliate links only, so no purchasing. I am currently using these taxonomies:
Category - the type of book (hardback, soft, digital, etc)
Tag - the genre
Author - book author. this relates to genre taxonomy as author will only focus on one genre
Region - the book's country of origin. This relates to author taxonomy
Current use of these taxonomies on products make the site feel too compartmentalized. I'd like the overall navigation to be more slick and interlinking, as the taxonomies relate to eachother in their certain ways. I'm aware wordpress has its limitations with creating clean URLs too.
As an example, this site (thesolesupplier dotcodotuk) was built by a wordpress dev and has a very clean and usable URL & breadcrumb structure when navigating through products.
I could end up on a very specific URL to show exactly what I need, e.g adidas socks then I could travel back through the taxonomies with the crumbs. The URL structure will be maintained throughout. Each breadcrumb step they take you through has SEO snippets on each one also.
It would be nice to understand how I can replicate that solesupplier structure in some way. Is woocommerce limiting what I can acheive?
Thank you!
