Are Social Media shares considered backlinks? If not do they help?

I started my blog a week and a half ago. Very happy with how it's going, I have had 3K pageviews and 2k unique users which I'm quite happy with. Especially given my main traffic source atm is only Facebook. I have had my content shared by a number of users, will this contribute to backlinks, if not will it still help my general search engine ranking. Being a young website none of my traffic is coming from Google according to search console. In a way I'm kind of looking it as a good thing as it tells me I have good growth scope since my content is being enjoyed by the readers.
