I request some advice on this vexing issue.

I want to change the permalinks of my WordPress site because as of now, year, month and day appear on those. I know how to change it to the post name only (by going to WP admin->Permalinks).

However, I am not sure how to redirect the new links to the older ones. Is there any way to remove the older ones from the search engines? Also, should I resubmit the new links to Google Search Console?

I am a little confused about permalinks because often bloggers optimise their older content. In the process, they may remove stopwords, add key terms in the URL, thereby changing the permalink. How does one go about doing all this? If permalinks are so permanent, does it mean URLs cannot or should not be optimised?
