Listing sites vs Google?

Hi,

I was thinking about starting a listing page for a specific type of local business in my state.
However, a Google search automatically pop-ups a list with markers. Which kinda defeats the need for listing pages?

Do you believe that listing sites can still be organically grown into something decent with decent visitor numbers?
