Blog on root or as a subdomain?

Hey all! Seeking some advice, when creating blogs, is it detrimental to have it hosted on a separate subdomain when compared to it being hosted on the root domain?

My thinking is that you then have two sites to rank which means double the work! I see quite a few ecomm brands taking this approach however...

What are your thoughts?
