Google's unintended attack on small businesses
Core Web vitals goes live May which promises to harm the rankings of websites with various performance /layout issues.
Unfortunately websites built using WordPress, Squarespace and Wix do not perform well due to various unused code.
With a huge proportion of small business websites built using these builders, drops in rankings will lead to drops in leads/clicks and ultimately revenue.
Google thinks that it can make these changes and it will have minimal consequences but it does not consider the wider impact.
These changes will mean that big budget companies will rise up to the top, whilst small businesses who cannot afford to build a flashy custom website will flail.
They are literally making the rich richer and the less well off poorer.
A real world example that Google has the power to change society and the economy at the flick of a switch, completely without any regulation.
