Internal Linking to homepage

Quick and simple question: Does in-text internal linking to your homepage have an impact? I have been wondering this for a while, as I usually only internal link to the other categories to create a structure.

For example: If a client has a page that needs to rank on a certain keyword for his homepage, does internal linking to the homepage have an impact on that specific anchor text?
