Help in Diagnosing an Impression/Click Drop from June Update
Hey all, I'm hoping I could get some assistance in diagnosing a sharp decline (~50%) in impressions and clicks for a blog post of ours that seems to have occurred on about June 7th, when a myriad of sites saw major impacts, both positive and negative, from the June Core Update.
Background:
- The niche of the blog is related to web conferencing, one of many topics our site touches on related to team collaboration, communication, VoIP, etc.
- The blog was posted back in 2016, and more recent blogs and pages didn't see the same type of impact
- absolutely no grey or black hat SEO was ever done on the site, it is almost entirely focused on quality content
The blog is still ranking number 1 for a lot of our top keywords and is at the top of the SERP for most relevant terms on the topic, but saw a 50% drop in impressions and clicks alike on June 7th that has held until today, while average position hasn't moved substantially
My working theory is that we were getting impressions for terms that were adjacent to our target keywords, but since we don't actually use any of those related terms in the copy or h2/h3s we lost impressions and ergo clicks.
Any insight yet on what the June/July core updates focused on, and why it had such dramatic impacts in both directions for a bunch of sites?
