What is the "gclid" URL parameter that people link to me? What are they doing that?

Sometimes I see sites that link to me and append this to their URL:

.com/my-slug/?gclid=ABCDEFGHIJKLM

GCLID is a tracking code for Google Analytics and AdWords - but why are they doing that to me?
