What is the Role of Speed Optimization in SEO?

I am trying to do the Seo of my website. I read alot of articles on it watched videos etc. There are two kinds of SEO. onpage,offpage. But I didn't understand yet that what is the role of Speed optimization in it. Because if my website has good onpage seo and offpage seo backlink strategy then why i need speed optimization of website?
