Snagging up expired/old DA 40+ links for local SEO?

i have a local site I am trying to rank. I found a couple fairly large regional websites ( local / regional magazine site) with outdated links that go to domains that are no longer registered.

Is it worth registering these? If so is there anything I should watch out for? I was concerned maybe the on page content from linking page could have a negative effect if it does not match the niche
