Is Wikipedia like DMOZ now, where editors fight for links?

I remember the last days of DMOZ directory, when corrupt editors fought for backlinks by removing links to competitors. I lately saw something similar on Wikipedia. Does this happen to everyone?

Note: I am not promoting anything in Wikipedia, just noticed that some Open Source projects disappeared because of the lack of Notability.
